چکیده

PREVIOUS studies on the transplantation of limbs in the embryo of Eleutherodactylus martinicensis have shown that supernumerary limbs tend to be less well innervated than are corresponding replacing grafts, and that the innervation of the former, either autografts or homografts, is progressively less extensive with increase in time after operation. The degree to which grafted supernumerary forelimbs show movement in life parallels the extent of their motor innervation when studied subsequently in serial sections. The loss of innervation and of movement is particularly drastic near the time when the animal normally hatches and the tail undergoes atrophy. The present paper describes some further experiments made with the aim of throwing light on the causes which underly the degeneration of motor nerves within supernumerary limb grafts in this animal.

A boundary model for pattern formation in vertebrate limbs.

We postulate that positional information for secondary embryonic fields is generated by a cooperative interaction between two pairs of differently determined cell types. Positional information is thus generated at the boundaries between cells of different determination. The latter are assumed to result from the primary pattern formation in the embryo. The application of this model to vertebrate...

Experimental Production of Atrophied and Partly De- Ficient Limbs (phocomelias) in the Axolotl Embryo*

The many different types and variations of deformities of limbs in animals and man are usually described and grouped from the morphological or genetical point of view. A very few biological experiments have been done for the purpose of elucidating the causes which produce special types of deformities in the embryo. In an earlier paper (Brandt, 1940) the author has shown that supernumerary limbs...
